Kjeller Vindteknikk develops and delivers icing forecasts for several different industrial applications in the wind energy and wind engineering sectors. In one of our latest wind energy customer projects, we were chosen to provide pilot wind energy icing loss forecasts for the Finnish network operator Fingrid for winter 2023/2024. In given weather situations, ice accumulates on the wind turbine blades resulting in lower-than-expected power production causing challenges for day-ahead production estimates. During the pilot period, further model improvements and validations will be carried out. Work is now in progress at Fingrid on how these icing forecasts can be used to improve grid operations.
