Together with Eltemtek, Kjeller Vindteknikk has the privilege to create both ice and wind load maps for Turkey. These maps will be used by the Turkish transmission system operator Türkiye Elektrik İletim A.Ş. (TEİAŞ) for planning and designing the transmission lines to be techno-commercially reliable in harsh winter conditions. This is an important step in ensuring energy reliability across Turkey.

“Turkey is a mountainous country with winters similar to Scandinavian cold climate conditions. We have experience in developing accurate climatic maps for the purposes of the development of wind farms and the electrical grid in Scandinavia. Using this, we will assist Turkish utilities in developing nationwide ice and wind load maps”, says Dr. Bjørn Egil Nygaard, Meteorologist and senior adviser at Kjeller Vindteknikk.

Nygaard explains: “In this project, we will combine our simulations with the data from sensors installed across Turkey, giving us a thorough picture of the climatic conditions. We will investigate the different icing types, and how the ice load varies in the complex Turkish terrain. The result will be high resolution maps showing extreme values for both ice and wind load, as well as the combined load from wind and ice. These combined climatic loads are typically design drivers for the transmission lines and support towers.”
